Physician practices are required to submit data to two public health agencies as part of meaningful use stage 2's objective 10, according to CMS' recently released final rule, and Medicare requires that providers choose from three types of reporting: immunization data, syndromic surveillance or specialized registry reporting. Yet the final rule also standardized a list of exclusions for each category, which, if applicable to a provider, would exclude the practice from having to meet the reporting requirements for a given category. In this Part B News article, Michaela Poizner notes that providers can opt for an exclusion if they find that registry reporting is nonexistent in their area or if no registries are equipped to accept data submissions from the provider's certified electronic health record technology (CEHRT).
"Many times, an exclusion applies because the local public health registry simply doesn't have the technological capability of receiving a provider's electronic reports in a way that meets the CEHRT standards," said Ms. Poizner.
