Matthew G. White, an experienced cybersecurity, data privacy, and technology attorney with the national law firm Baker Donelson, has earned the Artificial Intelligence Governance Professional (AIGP) credential from the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP).
With the rapid expansion of AI technology, AI governance professionals are tasked with the critical responsibilities of evaluating AI, integrating relevant standards and best practices, and developing and implementing strategies for compliance with applicable laws and regulations. The AIGP credential demonstrates an individual's knowledge in promoting transparency, trust, and safety in the development and deployment of AI systems.
A shareholder in Baker Donelson's Memphis office and co-chair of the Financial Services Cybersecurity and Data Privacy Team, Mr. White focuses his practice on advising clients across a range of industries, including financial services, health care, education, and government on cybersecurity, data privacy, technology, and AI-related legal and regulatory matters. He has particular experience advising financial institutions, including banks, credit unions, lenders, FinTech's, insurance companies, InsurTechs, investment advisory firms, and broker-dealer firms. He counsels clients on all aspects of privacy and cybersecurity, including litigation and breach response, privacy compliance, transactional diligence, and the defense of regulatory actions. His experience includes addressing legal obligations under a wide range of regulations and frameworks including GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, GLBA, HIPAA, state regulations, the EU Artificial Intelligence Act, as well as PCI-DSS.
Mr. White frequently provides thought leadership on data privacy, cybersecurity, and emerging AI issues, both in client counseling and at industry conferences, and has represented clients in regulatory enforcement actions, investigations, and litigation before the SEC, FINRA, and other regulatory bodies. He regularly advises clients on privacy and cybersecurity compliance, cyber incident response, and regulatory investigations, as well as related litigation and arbitration. Mr. White is also a member of the Firm's Incident Response Team, which has been named an Authorized Breach Coach® by NetDiligence.
Mr. White is a member of multiple bar associations, including the American, Tennessee, and Virginia Bar Associations, as well as the Memphis Bar Association and the Bar Association of the District of Columbia. He is a member of DRI, where he has served on the Commercial Litigation and the Government Enforcement and Corporate Compliance Committees, as well as the Complex Commercial Litigation and the Securities Enforcement Subcommittees. He has been listed in Mid-South Rising Stars since 2014, and he has also been recognized by the Memphis Business Journal as a Top 40 Under 40 (2016) and as a Best of the Bar Ace Associate (2018). Mr. White is a member of the FBI Citizens Academy Alumni Association and was named a 2025 Thomson Reuters Stand-out Lawyer.
