Jeremy Ray is an experienced litigator and problem solver with a significant amount of experience in handling complex business and intellectual property disputes.

Professional Biography


Mr. Ray represents national and regional clients in a wide range of business and commercial disputes, including, among other things, contractual disputes, unfair competition and non-compete matters, alleged breaches of fiduciary duties, and other business torts. He also has significant experience in litigating intellectual property and entertainment industry matters for clients as diverse as artists, music publishers, songwriters, software companies, brands, startups, and television personalities.

Prior to the practice of law, Mr. Ray served as a commercialization and technology transfer analyst for the University of Tennessee Research Foundation, where he evaluated scientists' research and conducted prior art searches, patentability assessments, industry analyses, and in-depth marketing studies for licensing. He also worked as a legal intern for a multiprogram science and technology national laboratory, where he was exposed to a variety of issues relating to intellectual property management, technology transfer, and export control.

In law school, Mr. Ray received the Excellence in Intellectual Property Award, given to the Top IP Student at his College of Law. Mr. Ray also received a nomination to join the Order of Barristers, a national honors organization recognizing exceptional skill and achievement in trial advocacy, oral advocacy, and brief writing. Mr. Ray served as acquisitions editor for the Tennessee Journal of Law & Policy and editor of the Tennessee Journal of Race, Gender & Social Justice.

Mr. Ray is admitted to practice before all state and federal courts in Tennessee and the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals.

  • Represented plaintiffs alleging copyright infringement of approximately 2,500 musical compositions against the world’s top interactive streaming service.

  • Negotiated a favorable nuisance value settlement for a defendant singer/songwriter in a copyright infringement suit involving the client's 4x-platinum song.

  • Negotiated a private settlement for a defendant music publisher in a copyright infringement suit involving a No. 1 song.

  • Negotiated a private settlement for plaintiff songwriters in a copyright infringement suit against a top artist for a 3x-platinum song.

  • Negotiated a private settlement for a plaintiff music producer in a copyright infringement suit.

  • Represented a plaintiff software developer in multiple suits, including claims for copyright infringement and trade secret misappropriation against multinational telecommunications companies; obtained favorable private settlements for the client.

  • Earned a timely and cost-effective dismissal of all claims against the defendant music publisher in a suit including copyright infringement and accounting claims.

  • Represented an online direct-to-fan music platform and its directors in litigation alleging breach of contract and fraudulent inducement; private settlement reached.

  • Represented and obtained favorable settlements for clients receiving demand letters alleging copyright infringement related to unauthorized use of music in online content (e.g., YouTube videos).

  • Obtained multiple favorable rulings on motions to dismiss and summary judgment for clients in various industries.

  • Served on the trial team and as second chair in a suit against a large film studio, resulting in positive outcomes on all claims and a mid-seven-figure recovery for the client.

  • Obtained summary judgment, which was upheld on appeal, for a dental professional association in a suit seeking specific performance of an alleged merger contract.

  • Represented a public technology company in litigation alleging breach of contract and unjust enrichment.

  • Represented a dental office and provider in defending health care liability claims; successfully argued a motion to dismiss and subsequent motion for reconsideration.

  • Represented a manufacturer/distributor of a widely used dental device in product liability/health care liability litigation alleging defective design.

  • Represented an industry-leading social news discussion forum in defending copyright and trademark infringement claims.

  • Represented a singer sued by a visual artist for shooting a music video in front of the artist's mural.

  • Represented an entity in obtaining a restraining order against an individual leaving fictitious customer reviews.
